The assertion that the novel coronavirus originated from a laboratory in Wuhan has been made by French Nobel Laureate scientist Luc Montagnier. According to a statement made to a French news agency, Montagnier stated that research on the virus had been ongoing in the laboratory since the beginning of the century, with those working there becoming experts in the virus. It has been alleged that the virus may have contained elements of HIV and possibly a malaria virus.

The theory that the virus was created in the laboratory and subsequently spread globally has gained traction, with US President Donald Trump recently claiming that an intern at the Wuhan Institute of Virology may have accidentally released the virus. An Australian media outlet has reported that coronaviruses are common in bats, and while the virus was not a biological weapon, it was still being studied in the Wuhan laboratory. It is believed that the virus was initially transmitted from bats to humans, and an accidental release from the laboratory may have led to its spread.

Montagnier was awarded the Nobel Prize in 2006 for his work in identifying the AIDS virus, and he is highly regarded in his field. However, many do not accept his claim regarding the origin of the coronavirus, and he has faced criticism for his statements.
